Custom Size Picture Frames, Cut to an Eighth of an Inch
Every frame we make is built to the size on your order. Not a size near yours — yours, down to an eighth of an inch. Odd sizes, standard sizes, a long skinny panorama, a perfect square: it is the same job here, because we do not pull finished frames off a shelf. There is really not anything we cannot do.
That is what custom size means at Florida Frames. This page covers the rest of it: the sizes you can order straight off the website, the sizes we want you to call about, what to type in the size boxes, how the price works, how long it takes, and what happens if the size turns out wrong.
What custom size means here
We make all of our frames custom to the size you ordered, down to an eighth of an inch. Any size, odd or standard. Every frame is made to order based on what you asked for, so a 17-3/8 by 23-1/8 is a normal order rather than a special request, and there is no list of stock sizes for you to compromise against.
A 16×20 and a 16-1/2 by 20-1/4 go through the shop the same way, and the price follows the size of the frame and the width of the profile either way, not whether the number is a common one.
The sizes you can order
On the website: 5×5 up to 60×60
Those are the limits of the size fields, not the limits of the shop. Anything inside that range you can order yourself, right now, without talking to anybody.
Under 5×5, call or email
Five by five is currently the smallest size the website will take, and we can manufacture smaller than that. We can go down to probably 3×3, potentially smaller. We just ask that you call or email for anything under 5×5, because there may be additional details we need from you. There is really not something we have turned down because of its size.
Over 60 inches, call or email
Sixty by sixty is where the website stops. It is not necessarily the maximum we can make. Above that there are specific questions and details we need from you, so that one starts with a phone call or an email. There is probably no hard minimum or maximum on what we can do — on certain sizes we just want all the details before you pay for anything.
The real ceiling is about 96 inches
As a general rule we can build a frame up to about 96 inches on a side. A few profiles stop short of that, so the profile you pick matters. Past 60 inches the questions are less about whether we can make it and more about how it gets to you: a frame that size ships ready to assemble or by freight, and picking it up at the shop is often the simplest answer. That is exactly why anything over 60 inches begins with a conversation instead of a checkout.
Call 727-572-4064 or send us the size and we will tell you what that moulding can do.
How to order a custom size
Understand the piece you are framing, enter those dimensions — height and width — on the product page of the moulding you want, and we manufacture it. There is no configurator to learn and no quote to wait on. Pick a profile anywhere on the site, whether that is a floater frame, a frame for a canvas or a shadow box, type your size, and order it.
Give us the artwork dimensions, not the frame dimensions
Where the site says we manufacture the frame to fit your artwork, we mean the actual dimensions of the artwork. We cut with the standard industry allowance of an eighth of an inch. So if your artwork is 11×14, enter 11×14. We cut it with that eighth-inch allowance so the artwork actually fits. You do not add the allowance yourself, and you do not need to do any arithmetic before you order.
Floater frames are the one place to slow down
Measure accurately. On a floater you choose how much float space sits around the piece, and if your measurements are off and you have chosen a very minimum gap or no gap at all, the canvas may not fit. The folds at the corners of a stretched canvas, plus a measurement that is slightly out, are enough to do it. If you have not ordered a floater before, read how to frame a canvas and the canvas depth guide first, or shop by depth on floater frames for canvas.
If you want a mat
If you are buying the mat and the frame individually rather than as a kit we sell, the size of the mat and the size of the frame have to be calculated against each other. That is worth a call if you have not done it before, because it is much easier to get right before we cut than after.
What we need from you
We do not touch any artwork here, so nothing needs to be shipped to us. Do not send us your piece. What we need is the specific dimensions of the artwork, because that is what we manufacture the frame from.
Beyond the dimensions, these help:
- The type of artwork you are framing.
- Whether you want a mat, glass or backer board included. All of that comes with a kit, or you can buy the pieces individually.
- For a canvas going into a floater: height, width and depth. The depth of the canvas is what determines which floater can accept it, so it is not an optional measurement.
- How you plan to mount and install it, and whether you want a kit with the hardware in it. Hardware can also be bought on its own.
One note on glazing before you plan a kit around it: a kit built on the website comes with premium clear acrylic or an upgraded acrylic, because glass does not ship by parcel carrier. If a piece must have real glass, call or email and we will build the kit for pickup at the shop. Which glazing you want depends on the piece and on how it is getting to you, so read the glass and acrylic guide or call and we will sort it out with you.
If you have questions about what you are framing and how to frame it properly, customer service is available by phone or email. That is what we are here for.
How a custom size is priced
All of our frames, custom or standard, are priced the same way: the cost of making the frame plus the material in it, which comes down to the overall dimensions and the width of the profile. An 11×14 differs from an 11×16. The price goes higher as the frame gets larger in the same profile, and it works the same way for a standard size as it does for a custom one, because they are the same job here. We do not price by united inches, the industry shorthand of height plus width.
You see the number before you buy. Pricing is viewable on the website, as are the quotes for the frames and for the kits. If you need additional supplies outside the frame itself, those are priced on their own product pages.
Can every moulding be made in any size?
The short answer is yes. Every moulding can be made at any size. What changes as the frame gets bigger is not whether we can build it, it is how it gets to you.
Large frames: ready to assemble, or freight
Parcel carriers have a size limit. Once two sides of a fully assembled frame pass a certain dimension, the box is physically too large to go by UPS or FedEx, and no amount of packing changes that. Checkout tells you when your size crosses that line, and you get two choices.
The first, and the one most of our customers take, is ready to assemble. It costs nothing extra. The frame is made and finished to your exact size, then ships as a kit: four sides, plus the plugs and glue to put it together. It takes a few minutes and there are videos for both kinds: assembling a ready-to-assemble frame and assembling a ready-to-assemble floater.
The second is fully assembled by freight, on a pallet. Freight on a single frame usually runs $200 to $400. For one frame that is often more than the frame itself, which is why most people go ready to assemble. For a batch it is a different calculation: several frames on one pallet is a very common way for us to ship, and the freight cost per frame comes out quite reasonable.
Stock length is the other variable
Mouldings come in average lengths of 8 to 10 feet. For very large options it depends on the moulding and on the stock we have at the time. That is why if you are over 60 inches on a side, we ask you to contact us, so we can look at current stock and tell you what we can actually create rather than guess.
For the most part, yes, any moulding at any size. Over those dimensions, call or email first.
A custom size does not take longer
Lead times for custom sizes and standard sizes are the same. Most orders ship within 7 to 10 business days of when you place them. Plan on under two weeks to ship, then transit on top, which depends on where you are. Do not plan around the seven; plan around the two weeks.
A large order can add a few days of production. An average amount, one or three or five or seven, falls inside the standard lead time. If you have a lot of frames and a date, call before you order and we will tell you what we can commit to. None of it depends on custom size versus standard size.
Custom size shadow boxes
Shadow boxes are very popular for framing a jersey, a letterman’s jacket, or some sort of memorabilia, and a jersey is not a size you find on a shelf anywhere.
They work because they give you a very large rabbet depth: a lot of space from the back of the frame to the front lip where the glass would sit. That depth is the whole point of the profile.
On style, most people want something simpler, because you want the memorabilia to be the center of attention rather than the moulding. Two really good options, one black and one white:
Both have a 2-1/4" rabbet, which gives you a good amount of depth for a jersey or memorabilia, and both are made to your dimensions like everything else here. Enter the size you want and order it. If you are not sure what size a folded jersey wants to be, call and we will talk it through.
Real wood, and a person on the phone
All of our product is real wood. A lot of the time the online framers you find are selling plastic frames. High-quality real wood frames are not something you see often from the big online companies, and that is what makes us stand out.
The other half of it is that we are a small family-owned company with very good customer service. You can call and talk to a human being, or email and a human being will respond and guide you through every step or question. We care about every order that goes out, the quality of the frame, and the quality of all the pieces of the kit. We will always make things right if we need to.
If the size comes out wrong
This is the part that keeps people from ordering custom online, so here it is plainly.
We have a very low return rate due to manufacturing or errors on our part, but mistakes can happen. You are ordering a custom-made frame — we cut and assemble everything custom to your order — and a custom product is not typically returnable, whether that is something embroidered with your name or a custom-sized frame.
If you as the customer purchase the wrong sized frame, you can return it for a 30% restocking fee. Ship it back to us.
If we make an error on our side, which is very rare, we will always do our very best to make it right.
And whether it is a customer mistake, something you believe is a mistake on our end, or an issue in shipping transit, contact us. You will speak to a human being and we will find a solution the best we can.
There is not a job too large or too small
Custom sizes, very small sizes, very large sizes, floaters, traditional frames, shadow box frames, whatever you are looking for: contact customer service and you get a live human person who will help and guide you in any way we can.

Frequently asked questions
What does custom size mean at Florida Frames?
It means we make every frame custom to the size you ordered, down to an eighth of an inch. Any size, odd or standard. Nothing here is pulled off a shelf of ready-made sizes, so an unusual dimension is a normal order rather than a special request.
What are the smallest and largest frames you can make?
On the website the smallest is currently 5×5 and the largest is 60×60. Those are the limits of the size fields, not of the shop. We can manufacture smaller — probably down to 3×3, potentially smaller — and as a general rule we can build up to about 96 inches on a side, though a few profiles stop short of that. For anything under 5×5 or over 60 inches, call 727-572-4064 or email. Very large frames ship ready to assemble or by freight, or you can pick them up at the shop.
My artwork is 11x14. What size frame should I order?
Enter 11×14. Where the site says we manufacture the frame to fit your artwork, give us the actual artwork dimensions and we cut with the standard industry allowance of an eighth of an inch, so the artwork fits. You do not add the allowance yourself.
Do I measure differently for a floater frame?
Measure accurately, because a floater is less forgiving. You choose how much float space sits around the piece, and if your measurements are slightly off and you have chosen a very minimum gap or no gap, the canvas may not fit — stretched canvas folds at the corners and is rarely perfectly square. Our how to frame a canvas guide walks through it.
Does a custom size take longer than a standard size?
No. Lead times for custom and standard sizes are the same. Most orders ship within 7 to 10 business days of when you order, plus transit; plan on under two weeks to ship. A large order can add a few days of production, so call with your date if you have a lot of frames and a deadline. One, three, five or seven frames falls inside the standard lead time.
Do I need to send you my artwork?
No. We do not touch any artwork, so nothing should be shipped to us. We need the specific dimensions of the artwork and we manufacture the frame from those. If it is a canvas going into a floater, we need the depth as well as the height and width, because depth determines which floater can accept it.
How is a custom size priced?
On the cost of making it plus the material in it: the overall dimensions and the width of the profile. An 11×14 differs from an 11×16, and the price goes higher as the frame gets larger in the same profile. It is not priced by united inches. Pricing is viewable on the website, along with quotes for frames and kits, and additional supplies outside the frame are priced on their own product pages.
Can every moulding be made in any size?
The short answer is yes. What limits it is stock length: mouldings come in average lengths of 8 to 10 feet, and for very large frames it depends on the moulding and the stock we have at the time. So if you are over 60 inches on a side, contact us and we will look at current stock and tell you what we can actually create.
Will a large custom frame arrive assembled?
Up to a point. Parcel carriers have a size limit, and once two sides of an assembled frame pass it the box physically cannot ship that way. Checkout tells you when your size crosses the line. Then you choose: ready to assemble at no extra cost, which is the frame made to your exact size shipped as four finished sides with plugs and glue, or fully assembled by freight, which usually runs $200 to $400 and makes sense mostly when several frames share one pallet.
Can I return a custom frame if I ordered the wrong size?
Yes, for a 30% restocking fee. Just ship it back to us. A custom product is not typically returnable — we cut and assemble everything custom to your order, the same as something embroidered with your name — so the restocking fee is how we handle a wrong size ordered by the customer.
What if the frame is wrong because of a mistake on your end?
We have a very low return rate due to manufacturing or errors on our part, but mistakes can happen, and if we make an error we will always do our very best to make it right. Customer mistake, something you believe is a mistake on our end, or an issue in shipping transit — contact us. You will speak to a human being and we will find a solution the best we can.
Can you make a custom size shadow box for a jersey?
Yes. Shadow boxes are very popular for a jersey, a letterman’s jacket or some sort of memorabilia. Shadow boxes work because of the large rabbet depth, the space from the back of the frame to the front lip where the glass would sit. 1423 Black and 1424 White both have a 2-1/4" rabbet, and a simpler style like those keeps the memorabilia as the center of attention. Both are cut to your dimensions.
